New York Pay Transparency Law

Since September 17, 2023, employers with 4+ employees in New York must provide: compensation or range of compensation in advertised jobs, promotions, and transfers. New York City has its own posting law (effective November 1, 2022).

How to use this law when negotiating

The posted range tells you the employer's budget โ€” anchor near its top. Then cross-check against the federal payroll data for your role: if the posting tops out below the market P75, that gap is your documented case for more. Look up your market rate on the salary pages or check if you're underpaid.
