vs Portland · lowest of the rest

At $350,000, New York City ranks 29th of the 30 metros this engine models: $17,684 a month, $2,858 a month behind Austin and $620 ahead of Portland at the bottom. Against the median metro (Columbus) the difference is $1,387 a month, $16,639 a year less. Federal tax and FICA are identical everywhere at this salary, so the entire spread across the table is the state and local layer: $34,298 a year here, 9.8% of gross, to New York and New York City. That is $34,298 a year more than Austin withholds on the same offer.

Taxable income here is $333,900, which sits $306,700 below the 37% federal bracket that opens at $640,600. A raise smaller than that is taxed entirely at 35% plus the 6.85% New York rate; anything larger crosses into 37% on the excess, and the combined marginal rate on that excess becomes 45.3%.

Ranking covers every metro in the engine, not only the pages published so far; 2 of the 30 have a published $350K audit — see all of them on the $350K national page.

The offer that matches $350K in New York City elsewhere

Salary needed for the same $17,684/mo · 2026

Two offers in two metros are only comparable after tax, so this is $17,684 a month rewritten as a salary everywhere else. Matching it takes $365,500 in Portland and $295,300 in Austin — a $70,200 spread for identical money in the bank. New York City ranks 29th of 30 on that measure: an Austin offer $54,700 lower would leave you level, and a Portland offer has to clear $365,500 — $15,500 above this one — before it does. The premium is not a fixed percentage; it is set by where $350,000 falls in each schedule, so it widens with every tier and the ratio on this page does not carry to a different salary.

Hold the money left after a median 1-bedroom constant instead — $13,784 a month here, once $3,900 of rent is paid — and the table reorders. San Francisco needs $332,200 against a $3,250 1-bedroom; Houston needs $246,700 against $1,300. On that measure New York City is 30th of 30 where it was 29th of 30 on tax alone, so rent works against New York City at $350K.

Each figure is solved against the same 2026 engine that produced this page — federal brackets, FICA, the state schedule and any city tax — for a single filer taking the standard deduction, before a 401(k). What is specific to New York City

Living in New York City. New York City is the only place in our set where three progressive income taxes stack — federal, state and the city's own resident tax — which is why it posts the lowest monthly take-home of any metro at every salary. What the paycheck does not show is that most residents do not own a car, and that the city's 1-bedroom median is skewed by Manhattan; the outer boroughs and the Hudson County side of the river run substantially lower, and Yonkers residents pay a 16.75% surcharge on state tax instead of the city's full schedule.

The New York layer. New York's brackets rise gently through the middle of the range — 5.4% at $13,900 of taxable income, 5.9% at $80,650, 6.85% at $215,400 — after an $8,000 standard deduction, plus a Paid Family Leave premium capped near $355. The statewide figure applies to residents outside New York City and Yonkers; those two add a local tax on top, and their audits show it. Long Island and the Hudson Valley are taxed at the state level only.

New York uses progressive brackets. After the $8,000 state deduction, $342,000 is taxable; the top dollar is taxed at 6.85% but the effective state rate is only 5.9%, for a bill of $20,812. Employees also fund NY Paid Family Leave ($355/yr).

New York City is one of the U.S. cities with its own income tax. NYC resident income tax takes $13,131 a year (3.876% at the margin). Together the local layer is $13,131, about $1,094 a month that a resident of most other metros never sees withheld.

The federal bill is $85,634. After the $16,100 standard deduction, $333,900 of taxable income runs through the 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% brackets; the marginal rate is 35% but the effective federal rate on gross pay is 24.5%. Every extra dollar of pre-tax 401(k) contribution at this salary saves 35 cents federally and about 7 cents at the state level.

Because $350,000 exceeds the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500, the 6.2% OASDI levy stops after $184,500 of wages; the remaining $165,500 is only subject to Medicare, plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare tax on wages above $200,000 ($1,350 here). That is why the effective FICA rate is 5.10% rather than the headline 7.65%.

How a 401(k) changes the monthly number

Each dollar deferred costs less than a dollar of cash flow because it leaves before income tax. The gap between "contribution" and "cash-flow cost" is your immediate tax saving.

How this audit was computed

The figures above are produced by a deterministic tax engine, not a survey. Gross pay is reduced by the 2026 federal standard deduction and run through the seven federal brackets; FICA is applied to wages with the Social Security cap and Additional Medicare threshold; New York's progressive schedule and deduction is applied next, followed by New York City's local tax rules. Rent is a median asking price for a 1-bedroom, refreshed quarterly.

Assumptions: single filer, standard deduction, no dependents, no itemized deductions, no bonus or equity, employer-side taxes excluded. Actual withholding on a pay stub depends on Form W-4 elections and pay frequency; year-end liability is what is shown here. Read the full methodology or report a correction.
