Best Value Markets: Pay vs. Cost of Living
For tech workers optimizing pay-to-cost ratio, Singapore and Australialead the region. Singapore's CoL index of 83 (vs. NYC's 100) combined with its $98,500 median software engineer salary makes it the strongest overall value in APAC — you earn top-tier pay while spending 17% less than in New York.
Taiwanemerges as a sleeper pick. With a CoL index of 58 and a $45,000 median software engineer salary, the effective purchasing-power-adjusted salary is among the highest in Asia. The country's semiconductor boom is accelerating tech wages at 12–15% annually.
At the other end, Vietnam and the Philippines offer the lowest nominal salaries but with CoL indexes of 25 and 27 respectively, local purchasing power remains reasonable for domestic consumption. These markets are increasingly attractive for remote-first tech workers employed by foreign companies at international rates.
South Korea: APAC's Fastest-Growing Market
South Korea posted 18% year-over-year tech salary growth in 2025–2026 — the fastest of any market in the region. Three forces drove this acceleration:

Salary data was sourced from government payroll surveys (including Singapore MOM, Korea Statistics Korea, Japan MHLW, and India EPFO employer returns), LinkedIn Salary Insights (aggregated, anonymized data across verified profiles), and Glassdoor reported salary aggregates filtered for tech-industry company types. All figures represent median annual gross compensation in USD at January 2026 exchange rates.
Cost-of-Living Index values are calculated relative to New York City (index = 100) using Numbeo city cost data and World Bank purchasing power parity statistics. The index reflects overall consumer costs, not tech-specific housing or lifestyle costs.
Roles covered include Software Engineer (mid-level, 3–6 years experience), Data Scientist (mid-level), and Product Manager (mid-level). Seniority normalization was applied to ensure cross-market comparability. Outlier removal (top/bottom 5th percentile) was applied before computing medians.
